Average Joe is a state of being. It’s a mindset, as outline in the post Average Joe – The Mindset. I often refer to myself as the Average Joe (just look at the author tag under the page title above). That is not because I have a monopoly on common sense, or that I think I am representative of Joe Blow regular guy, even though in a lot of ways I am. No, it is because I’m just a regular guy trying to find his way in the world, and looking to have a few laughs along the way.
I do not profess to be an expert on any of the topics discussed here or in my books. The Average Joe out there on the street is not an expert on climate change, or economics, or whatever topic you want to choose today. He likely has a workign knowledge of these items, and has formed his own opinions based on that knowledge. For the rest, we must rely on our common sense.
For example, if we know that global temperatures were higher in the middle ages, before fossil fuels had been discovered, then common sense tells us that the hype over fossil fuels causing global warming is nonsense. If a major corporation is caught doing shady dealings, common sense should tell you that this is the fault of the individuals involved. Blaming all of “corporate America” is naive and senseless.
Average Joe is not an expert in any particular field of study. He is an expert in life. It has been said that common sense is so rare it should be considered a super power. I could not agree more. Think of Average Joe as a super hero, spreading common sense one reader at a time.
